The Audacity of Fiber-Wireless (FiWi) Networks

چکیده
A plethora of enabling optical and wireless technologies have been emerging that can be used to build future-proof bimodal fiber-wireless (FiWi) broadband access networks. After overviewing key enabling radio-over-fiber (RoF) and radio-andfiber (R&F) technologies and briefly surveying the state of the art of FiWi networks, we introduce an Ethernet-based access-metro FiWi network, called SuperMAN, that integrates next-generation WiFi and WiMAX networks with WDM-enhanced EPON and RPR networks. Throughout the paper we pay close attention to the technical challenges and opportunities of FiWi networks, but also elaborate on their societal benefits and potential to shift the current research focus from optical-wireless networking to the exploitation of personal and in-home computing facilities to create new unforeseen services and applications as we are about to enter the Petabyte age.

Backhaul-Aware Decoupled Uplink and Downlink User Association, Subcarrier Allocation, and Power Control in FiWi HetNets
Decoupling the uplink and downlink user association improves the throughput of heterogeneous networks (HetNets) and balances the traffic load of macro- and small- base stations. Recently, fiber-wireless HetNets (FiWi-HetNets) have been considered as viable solutions for access networks. To improve the accuracy of user association and resource allocation algorithms in FiWi-HetNets, the capacity ...

متن کاملGrouping by Cycle Length (GCL) for long-range FiWi networks
The integration of wireless access networks with optical access networks in the so-called fiber-wireless (FiWi) networks has recently emerged as a promising strategy for providing flexible network services at relatively high transmission rates. FiWi network research to date has mainly focused on optical access networks with the normal reach (around 20 km) of passive optical networks (PONs). We ...
متن کاملFiWi network throughput-delay modeling with traffic intensity control and local bandwidth allocation
Fiber-Wireless (FiWi) networks typically combine an optical access network with a wireless access network so as to build on the respective strengths of the optical and wireless network technologies. Prior analytical throughput-delay studies of FiWi networks have typically considered heavy-loaded traffic models, i.e., constantly backlogged source nodes. In contrast, in this paper we present a mo...

Current Gigabit-class passive optical networks (PONs) evolve into next-generation PONs, whereby high-speed 10+ Gb/s time division multiplexing (TDM) and long-reach wavelength-broadcasting/routing wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) PONs are promising near-term candidates. On the other hand, next-generation wireless local area networks (WLANs) based on frame aggregation techniques will levera...
